Guinea Declares December 28 for Presidential Election
This announcement closely follows the introduction of a revamped electoral code aimed at tightening the oversight and organization of political elections in the country.
The vote is highly anticipated as the decisive event concluding the transitional phase initiated by the September 2021 military coup. The coup elevated Colonel Mamady Doumbouya to power after he toppled former President Alpha Conde.
Last week, Guinea conducted a constitutional referendum regarded as a crucial milestone for reinstating constitutional governance. Final tallies, confirmed by the Supreme Court, showed the "yes" faction secured a commanding 89.38 percent of votes, while the "no" side received 10.62 percent.
Under the new Constitution, which replaces the earlier "Transition Charter," the previous prohibition on junta members running for office has been removed. This change opens the door for Doumbouya, the 40-year-old sitting president, to potentially stand as a candidate.
